ABOUT ZOË
I am a stone carver creating hand carved geometric sculpture in British stone. Working with a mallet and chisel, I carve directly into the surface to reveal forms that feel both precise and quietly alive.
Each piece is made slowly, by hand, in my Hampshire studio. The process is rhythmic and absorbing, a steady repetition that draws both maker and material into focus. What begins as a simple geometric framework gradually unfolds into a fully realised form, shaped as much by attention as by design.
My work is rooted in the idea of presence through precision. Geometry offers a quiet structure through which attention can settle. As each line is refined and each plane resolved, the act of making becomes one of deep concentration, where small decisions accumulate into something considered and whole. That same precision invites a similar experience in the viewer, a moment of stillness, clarity and connection.
I work exclusively with British stone, drawn to its sense of permanence and place. The finished pieces are intended to be experienced slowly, as light moves across the surface and the geometry reveals itself over time.
I create both wall based and freestanding sculpture, from smaller, intimate works to larger commissions for interior and outdoor spaces. Alongside unique pieces, I produce limited edition casts and run stone carving workshops from my studio.
WHY GEOMETRY?
Geometry holds a quiet power. It offers a sense of order that the mind instinctively responds to, patterns that feel both grounding and endlessly engaging. There is something deeply satisfying in the way repetition, symmetry and proportion create harmony, allowing the eye to move across a surface and continually discover new relationships.
For me, this is where the challenge and the joy meet. The precision required leaves little room for error, demanding complete focus and attention. That intensity creates a state of absorption, where time softens and the act of making becomes both exhilarating and deeply calming.
I am drawn to the balance geometry holds between simplicity and complexity. From a distance, forms can appear ordered and clear, yet on closer inspection reveal layers of intricacy. This mirrors something innate in how we perceive the world, a natural attraction to patterns that feel coherent, structured and meaningful.
There is also a timelessness to geometry. It connects across cultures and histories, appearing in nature, architecture and sacred design. Working with it feels like participating in something much larger than myself, a visual language that continues to unfold with each piece I carve.
BRITISH STONE
I have a deep and lasting connection with British stone. After living abroad for two years, I remember the moment I returned to carving Welsh slate, it felt like being reunited with an old friend. I was completely absorbed by the process and the material, which had come from just a few miles from my parents’ home. From that point on, I chose to work exclusively with stone sourced here in the UK.
We are incredibly fortunate to have access to such beautiful and characterful materials, from the softness and clarity of Portland limestone to the warmth of Scottish red sandstone and the fine grain of Welsh slate. Each stone has its own challenges and qualities, and I take time to understand how best to work with it.
Over the years I’ve become more aware of the environmental impact of both quarrying and international shipping. Working with locally sourced British stone allows me to reduce the footprint of my practice while deepening my connection to the land and its geological history.
