The Art of Naming: Finding Meaning in Stone
A Name as a Story
For me, the process of naming a piece is as thoughtful and deliberate as carving the stone itself. My titles are drawn from the emotions and moments that shape my life while I’m working. They’re reflections of experiences, challenges, and connections. I gravitate towards words that evoke depth and nuance, often from other languages, words that carry weight beyond translation. Each title is a story, a marker of the journey I’ve taken with the stone.
Daring to Begin
My latest work is titled Audere, and epitomises this. Derived from the Latin word meaning “to dare,” Audere is about courage, stepping into the unknown with nothing but an idea and the willingness to risk failure. It reflects the journey I am taking with this piece, pushing myself creatively and technically in ways I hadn’t before.
The Challenges of Piercing Stone
This work challenges me on multiple levels. The carving process involves piercing through the stone, a delicate and painstaking endeavour. Each cut carries the risk of fracturing the piece entirely, demanding intense focus and care. Yet, that fragility is what makes the result so thrilling. It’s a lattice of light and shadow, a play of geometry that seems to defy the very nature of stone; weightless, almost suspended.
Exploring New Creative Paths
The creation of Audere comes at a time when I am exploring new ideas and directions in my practice. I want to see what can happen if I take risks, not just technically but conceptually. The piece stands as a reminder of what’s possible when you dare to try, even when the outcome is uncertain.
Life and Work: Inseparable Threads
This theme of daring and new beginnings feels especially poignant as my life outside the studio is also shifting. We’re in the process of moving house, a significant transition that mirrors the spirit of Audere. As an artist, I’ve always felt that you can’t separate home and work life. They are both part of who I am, and my creative practice is deeply tied to my personal experiences. What happens in my life flows naturally into my work, and having an awareness of my whole self, at home and in the studio, makes for more authentic art.
Excitement for What’s Ahead
As I prepare to exhibit Audere at Collect Art Fair, I’m filled with excitement. This event is an incredible opportunity to share my work with a wider audience, to connect with collectors, galleries, and others who share my passion for contemporary craft. The idea that this piece, born from such a personal and challenging process, might resonate with someone else is deeply rewarding.
Conclusion: Standing on the Edge of the Unknown
Audere isn’t just a sculpture; it’s a reflection of where I am in my creative journey, standing on the edge of the unknown, daring to step forward. Moving house and moving forward creatively, I’m reminded that life and art are inextricably linked. For me, that’s what makes the journey so meaningful.
