About the carving:
Zoë carved the original sculpture in 2021 to exhibit at Artefact Art Fair at the Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour, London. Having previously carved a smaller design called Breath with a similar but less complicated pattern, Zoë was intrigued to increase the complexity and size of her carvings.
Carved in her favourite Welsh Slate it took Zoë around 3 weeks to complete the carving. Zoë likes to give her work a title which reflects how she was feeling whilst carving it. This piece was made during a Covid pandemic lockdown, Zoë shared messages with her friends each evening of five small things which had made them smile during the day. Merak is a Serbian word for the pursuit of small, daily pleasures that all add up to a great sense of happiness and fulfilment.
The carving was sold at the Art Fair. The original stone was 50 x 50 x 5cm in size weighing 28kgs.
