Carving Courses

Learn How to Carve Stone

Zoë has been working with stone for over 15yrs. She’s worked as an architectural stone mason, letter carver, restoration carver and sculptor, giving her a breadth of knowledge ideal for teaching. She has an infectious passion for her craft, which inspires students and helps them gain the most possible from their time learning.

Whilst on her masonry apprenticeship Zoë spent her free time rowing, competing nationally. She went on to Coach rowing at Shrewsbury School and her local boat club. Teaching all ages, Zoë loved coaching the sport and found seeing her students progress very rewarding. Zoë has found a similar passion for teaching carving and has been able to implement the coaching skills she learnt.

Keen to promote her craft to the widest audience possible and facilitate learning Zoë now offers in person course from her studio in Hampshire

Course Options

Level 1

Beginners Day Course

A one day course ideal for those who have never picked up a chisel before.

The course runs from 9.30am -4pm from Zoë’s studio at Houghton Lodge Gardens (SO20 6LQ)

The day starts with a geometry drawing lesson to draw a five point star onto paper, before transferring the pattern to stone.

The focus is then on chisel skills and getting to grips with the basics. After a lunch break (either at the local pub in the winter for a warming bowl of soup, or at the cafe on site in the summer) You’ll then continue carving your project, with Zoë’s continuous support.

Zoë will provide everything you need to carve, including tools and material, you’re also welcome to take your work away with you.

The Beginners day course is £150 which covers stone, use of tools for the day, lunch and refreshments throughout. (theres usually a homemade cake or biscuit too!)

Level 2

Intermediate Day course

The intermediate course is aimed at those who have completed the beginners course with Zoë or those who have some previous carving experience.

the course is from 9.30am – 4pm in Zoë’s studio at Houghton Lodge Gardens, SO20 6LQ

In this course we will be building on chisels skills, and developing understanding of three-dimensional form.

The day will start by choosing a leaf to focus on and sketching the outside shape (don’t worry you don’t need any previous drawing experience)

We’ll then model the surface in clay to better understand the form and structure of the leaf, before starting the carving.

Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

Level 2 course is £170
